Before using your Pulmicort inhaler (Budesonide), ensure that you have read the patient information leaflet provided. It contains important instructions and details about the medication.
To prepare the inhaler for use, first shake the inhaler well for about 5 seconds. This ensures that the medication is properly mixed. Remove the cap from the mouthpiece and check for any foreign objects or debris. If the mouthpiece is dirty, clean it with warm water and let it air dry.
Next, exhale fully to empty your lungs. Hold the inhaler upright and place the mouthpiece in your mouth, sealing your lips around it. As you begin to inhale slowly through your mouth, press down on the inhaler to release a dose of medication. Continue to breathe in deeply and steadily for about 3 to 5 seconds to ensure the medication reaches your lungs.
After inhaling the medication, remove the inhaler from your mouth and hold your breath for about 10 seconds, or as long as comfortable. This helps the medication settle in your lungs. Then, exhale gently through your nose or mouth.
If your healthcare provider has prescribed more than one puff, wait for approximately 30 seconds before repeating the process. After using the inhaler, rinse your mouth with water and spit it out to minimize the risk of oral thrush.
It is essential to clean your inhaler regularly. At least once a week, remove the canister from the actuator and rinse the actuator under warm running water. Allow it to air dry completely before reassembling. Do not wash the canister.
Always follow your doctor's instructions regarding the frequency and dosage of your inhaler use. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.
Store your inhaler at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children. Regularly check the expiration date and dispose of any expired inhalers properly.
